Something about Blu-ray protection

AACS – The Advanced Access Content System is the most widely used form of protection found on nearly all Blu Ray discs manufactured today. Backed by large media companies like Warned HDr Bros., IBM, and Disney this protection was designed to cryptically encode the video contents on a disc and are set to only play back when an authorized player which contains the ‘unlock’ key can decode the encryption and play the movie as it was meant to be viewed.
BD-ROM Mark – Is an authoring process used while putting the disc together before the final cut is sent to the press. Basically the digital sequences are put in a random order and by providing the ’Mark’ in this the playback devices will construct the correct playback sequence and play in the correct order.
Region Codes – Just like what you would find on DVD discs, region codes are still used on Blu Ray movies to prevent discs in one country from being played in other counties. Manufacturers make hardware players specific for regions or counties and discs must be produced for these players. Studios like Universal Studios release their movies on region free discs as do a few others, but the majority add regions to their discs.

Difference between Blu-ray and HD DVD

Each next-generation DVD format comes in single-layer and dual-layer formats. For HD DVD, that means capacities of 15GB and 30GB; for Blu-ray, it's 25GB and 50GB. Blu-ray uses Sun Microsystems' Java software for built-in interactive features, whereas HD DVD uses a technology called iHD that Microsoft and Toshiba have worked on.

Format Standard
The HD-DVD format is, for all intents and purposes, dead. While you can still find lingering hardware and software for the HD-DVD format, production of all HD-DVD drives have been halted. The main format today is the Blu-ray Disc.

Capacity
A standard DVD can hold 4.7 gigabytes of data. A Blu-ray Disc can hold 25 to 50 GB, while an HD-DVD can hold 15 to 30 GB. Popularity
As Blu-ray is the current standard, there is more media available for the format. This includes content that was never made available to HD-DVD users. Quality
Most shows/movies take advantage of the higher capacity of both the Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD formats. Media is displayed at the highest resolution available and users can sometimes manipulate features (such as by using interactive cameras) that were not available on DVD.

Extras
As with DVDs, Blu-ray Discs and HD-DVDs generally give users extra content. The benefit to having extra space is that all of the extras are usually included on one disc, along with the main programming.

Pricing
As it is a dead format, all HD-DVD software and hardware can be found for a much lower price than Blu- ray Discs.
